Sensory Garden

We were lucky enough to be awarded a grant from Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership Health Improvement Fund, and also from the Coop Community Fund, which let us progress our sensory garden project this year. We had the turf all removed and a solid surface put down, and after we sourced a mix of larch backs and sleepers, our local Men’s Shed built eight large raised beds, and the council helped us fill them with the excavated turf and new topsoil and compost.

Planting is now under way, and we have local schools and groups planning, planting and maintaining the beds along with the community council and the Friends. It’s still a work in progress, as we want to add sculptures, seating and more plants as time (and funding) allows. We will have plants specifically aimed at stimulating the senses, and although the sensory garden will benefit all residents of the Bridge of Don and users of the park, it is particularly targeted towards people who may be less mobile, have special needs, or be less able to use the park for more physical activities.

If you would be interested in helping look after the garden please get in touch. No special skills or equipment is needed, just a desire to potter about planting or weeding and having a chat with other gardeners of all ages.
